5 reasons to sleep better

We all know what it feels like to not get a good night’s sleep. And let’s face it, it’s far from great. From that horrible feeling of lethargy and loss of concentration to having zero energy. So, it’s pretty obvious that getting a good amount of hours a night will make all the difference. But, did you know how amazing the actual health benefits are from sleeping well? We were a little surprised ourselves, to be honest! Take a look at this…


Poor sleep and weight gain

Research has suggested that regular poor sleep has been linked to weight gain. Although this is still to be investigated further, it goes to show how the power of a good night’s shut-eye can help your overall wellbeing, both physically and mentally.



Improves immune function

With such crazy busy lives and lots going on, who can afford to get sick? So, one of the ways to help to keep your immune system ticking over nicely is getting enough quality shut-eye. One study showed that those who slept less than 7 hours a night were almost three times more likely to develop a cold than those who slept eight hours or more.  So, if you needed more reasons to get under the duvet earlier, we think you just found it!


Brightens moods

Mental health issues, such as depression, are strongly linked to poor sleep and sleep disorders. In fact, between 60% and 90% of patients with depression suffer from insomnia. A decent night’s sleep every night has long been thought of as positive for our mental health and it can also improve concentration and memory too.


Sleep your way to longer life

This is a funny one as too little sleep is associated with a shorter lifespan, although it’s not clear as to why. One study carried out showed that people who slept less than seven hours a night had a 26% increased risk of death, but those who slept more than eight hours a night also had a shorter life expectancy! Clearly, the optimum number of hours to sleep a night here is between seven and eight.


Better relationships

Remember the saying, “Early to bed, early to rise makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise”? Well, we think whoever said it was really on to something as we know that sleep problems can negatively disrupt different aspects of life, from family to sex. So, even more reason to grab those PJ’s, make yourself a camomile tea and cosy up under the duvet, ready to feel refreshed and ready for anything the next day.
