The term ‘superfoods’ conjures up all sorts of images, doesn’t it? Like a blueberry in a mini cape with a big ‘B’ emblazoned across its chest, rolling off to save the world from a nutritional disaster! Blueberry benefits, as we’re sure you already know are immense. But what are superfoods?
You’ll find that superfoods are used to describe many different food types, from green tea to chocolate. However, *fun fact* the term is actually more accurately applied to ‘naturally occurring foods’ that are ‘unusually dense’ in nutrients for their calorie count. So there.
Common superfoods include lean meats like turkey, leafy greens like spinach and foods that ‘punch above their weight’ in terms of nutrition like salmon, fruits, nuts and of course our hero, the blueberry. And whereas it would be awesome to be able to eat these foods on a regular basis, it’s not always realistic from a budget or seasonal point of view. The key is to have a balanced diet that includes lots of nutritious whole foods, not just superfood.
